Today, we've been chatting to Matt Colegate, Founder of JOCO Cup about the runaway disconnect from clean living, self-care and the advice he'd give his 15-year-old self.
Where did you go on your last vacation?
Wyoming USA, The Teton National park is a winter wonderland and a great reminder of the magic that we need to protect.
Where in the world do you live and what do you love the most about it?
A little town called Breamlea, on the surf coast of Victoria. It was originally an old fishing town that is bordered by sand dunes and the ocean on one side and a river and farmland on the other side. It's surrounded by great surf, beaches and outdoor experiences.
What do you think the biggest threat is to our planet and the people in it today?
The runaway disconnect from clean living. Whether it is the food we eat, the water we drink or our individual footprint created from daily living. The obsession with convenience has lead us down a complicated pathway with many of the ill effects yet to come to the surface. We need to take some simple steps back to basics in a few areas that really matter and realise that the once thought 'convenience' is not really that convenient.
Give us your elevator pitch for your business/mission.
We believe it possible to experience life’s luxuries without compromising health or the natural environment. JOCO creates eco-innovative products that empower the individual to refuse plastic and single-use waste all whilst enhancing their daily ritual.
What drives you to get out of bed every day?
The excitement of the day ahead filled with family, fun, the outdoors and an occupation that is adding value back to people and the planet.
What one piece of advice do you wish you could give your 15-year-old self?
Rest assured that if you follow what you love, things will pan out. Opportunities will arise with family, good living and work-life that makes sense.
What does the word ‘community’ mean to you?
Community is a collective that if engaged well, is a powerful place and can move the world forward in the right direction. A place of exciting diversity, knowledge, support and care. A place that in general, we need to reconnect with again and experience the benefits.
Tell us about your self-care routine.
Heaps of family time – the most important aspect to self-care.
Plenty of surfing, snowboarding and outdoor activities, plus exercise to support these activities.
Staying hydrated can solve many more issues than one thinks.
Who/what has been the biggest influence in getting your life to the stage it’s at now?
My parents. They showed me a robust way of living life that incorporated fun, happiness, respect for where this comes from and hard work to protect and give back to this. A strong foundation to tackle all aspects of life, to experience the ups and to learn from the downs.
Thank you so much. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Many issues in today’s world may seem too big or overpowering to deal with. But it's not all doom and gloom, slight adjustments made from reconnecting with basics are very powerful. Embrace the small steps, know the negatives but focus on the positives and the momentum will build in the right direction.
